
◎About the Scenic Area
The Maulin National Scenic Area covers the townships of Maulin and Liukui
in Kaohsiung County, as well as parts of the administrative area of Santimen
Township in Pingtung County.
The Maulin Scenic Area has many tourist spots including the Baolai Hot Spring,
Forever Young Hot Spring, Tona Hot Spring, Eighteen Arhats Mountain, Meiya
Valley Waterfall, Dragon's Head Mountain, and Maulin Valley, etc.
◎Sightseeing Spots
i. Eighteen Arhats Mountain
Eighteen Arhats Mountain is the highest and steepest mountain in the area,
and therefore bears the nickname "Small Kuilin".
ii. The Laonung River
The Laonung River has a wide riverbed making it the only good location
for rafting in southern Taiwan. All other creeks and rivers provide good
locations for stream tracing, forest hiking, shrimp catching, and fishing.
iii. Aborigine culture
Maulin, Wanshan and Tona in Maulin Township are aborigine reservations
for the Rukai tribe. The Rukai Tribe is famous for their slate houses.
At present about 30 slate houses are preserved in the Tona Village, making
this the largest collection of preserved slate houses in Taiwan.
iv. The Liukiu Tunnel
The Liukiu Tunnel, consisting of six sections, is the only high tunnel
in southern Taiwan. This tunnel has become a famous scenic spot.
v. Tona Suspension Bridge
Maulin Scenic Area has several suspension bridges, of which the Tona Suspension
Bridge is famous for its length.
